International Day for Biological Diversity is an international special day dedicated to the promotion of the biological variety and variability of life on Earth, and the biodiversity issues that we face today. International Day for Biological Diversity was first established in 1993 by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly.
Originally this special day was observed on the 29th of December every year and it was later changed to the 22 of May in 2000. This is an occasion to educate the world on the importance of Biodiversity, and to make our society aware about biodiversity issues. This is a day that reminds us of the importance of each individual species on our planet.
International Day for Biological Diversity 2021 is observed with the slogan: “We’re part of the solution #ForNature”. It focuses on reminding us about the important role that biodiversity plays in finding solutions for several sustainable development challenges. It is about finding nature based solutions for reaching sustainable livelihoods and tackling climate, food and water and health issues.
